Abolitionist Feminisms – Extended Deadline: June 1, 2020

In light of the massive health crisis and the militant state response that has upended our lives, Abolition: A Journal of Insurgent Politics is extending the submission deadline for our Abolitionist Feminisms issue to June 1, 2020. We have received many wonderful submissions that we look forward to reading and reviewing.

To submit papers, poetry, interviews and art for the print issue, please go to the online system for Abolition: A Journal of Insurgent Politics

We understand that abolitionist feminist analysis is needed now.  Complex protection measures taken up in response to the COVID-19 pandemic–including school and job closure and household isolation–create conditions in which gender-based violence and domestic abuse increases, economic precarity and the withholding of basic needs are further entrenched, and unequal distributions of care work and feminized labor intensify labor exploitation. Access to self-determined healthcare, including reproductive services, is under increased threat as an officially declared “state of emergency” renders our material, bodily needs as “inessential.” Violent policing and a carceral culture of disposability have only escalated in an era of heightened potential for authoritarian rule. Jails, prisons, detention centers, and militarized national borders are securing and intensifying deadly race-class inequities; they expose trapped people to contagion, while preventing incarcerated people, detainees, and migrants from receiving healthcare and meeting basic needs for survival. Further, as abolitionist feminists have consistently emphasized, all forms of prisons are also sites of gender-based exploitation, violence, and sexual abuse.

We must address the intertwined violences of capitalism, heteropatriarchy, racism, and the carceral state in this moment of crisis. To contribute to abolitionist feminisms in this moment, we ask for submissions of writing and art for the Abolition blog, with writing at or approximating 1500 words.

To submit to the blog, please email: [email protected]

We encourage submissions from incarcerated writers and artists. We can receive mail at:
